Moving boxes: how do you choose an inexpensive and eco-friendly move

Adapted boxes: less waste

Each type of content has its box. That’s partly true, because the boxes sold by professionals can accommodate different types of objects.

Take for example boxes for glass. These boxes are equipped several rows of alcoves, separated by a cardboard partician. Each of the cubicles can hold a glass, which doesn’t need any additional packing (newspaper or plastic bubble wrap).

The alcoves can contain other fragile objects as well: Christmas ornaments, ties, lingerie, etc. The cardboard partician can be easily taken out, in order to recover the entire volume of the box.

Recovered boxes or sold in supermarkets are unsound

You need to think about a lot of things before you move, especially going hunting for boxes. The banana boxes and others available at the entrance of supermarkets are often recovered by individuals to move to Brabant Walloon. However, these free containers are far from being ideal:

• Prefer an air tight box: banana boxes have a large opening lid that can let dust and humidity through. Is it raining moving day? Beware of your belongings!
• The box must be rigid: The material that makes up the banana boxes and other inexpensive boxes sold are not adapted to the weight of the contents and stacking. • Select double flute boxes
• Opt for quality tape

A bad tape closes improperly and does not give you an air tight box. It tears quickly and damages the simple groove box.  The results, the box is un-reusable and must be thrown out.

When opening your boxes in your new home, use a cutter to slice the adhesive carefully. Leave the strips on the box, fold in and keep dry.

Latest tips for an eco-friendlier move

Why use newspaper or plastic bubble wrap, when you naturally have the necessary protection for your most fragile belongings? Your dish and bath towels, your rags and sheets must also be moved. Give them a protective role in the move!

A box should be able to close, so that it doesn’t get deformed. It’s useless to fill them up to the top to avoid sagging: close your cardboard box first on the width, easier, then on the length.

Avoid boxes made from recyclable material: they have a lower resistance to pressure which can damage the contents
